Sinopse: A história começa nos Estados Unidos nos anos 30, durante o período da Grande Depressão, onde nasce uma acirrada rivalidade entre os Ewings e os Barnes, clãs inicialmente unidos pelo desejo de enriquecer com a exploração de petróleo, mas por causa de um triângulo amoroso se entregam a uma sucessão de disputas e traições ao longo de décadas.

A série é construída ao redor da vida da família Ewing e de seu rival a família Barnes, tendo como personagem central J.R.Ewing, o filho mais velho da família,  terrível homem de negócios, manipulador sem escrúpulos, mas que acaba arruinando-se em várias ocasiões, interpretado por Larry Hagman, presente em quase todas as 14 temporadas da série. Depois de muitos anos o império dos Ewing passa a ser dirigido pelo outro filho mais novo, Bobby Erwing e sua cunhada Sue Ellen, mas J.R. (Larry Hagman) não está longe de ser carta fora do baralho. Embora dirija uma outra poderosa companhia, ele não desiste de recuperar o controle da Ewing Oil.

A oportunidade de conseguir o dinheiro é o que ele  precisa para dar a grande cartada, principalmente ao saber que Ray Krebbs  está falido e que em suas terras existe petróleo. J.R. logo põe em prática mais um de seus inescrupulosos planos, mas seu arquiinimigo Carter McKay  está prestes a tornar-se sócio de Bobby e também está de olho nas terras de Ray e assim a guerra começa.

Depois de perder seu império para o arquiinimigo Cliff Barnes e de uma tentativa de suicídio, o inescrupuloso J.R. Ewing muda-se para a Europa, mas cinco anos depois, ele surpreende todos com sua inesperada volta. Cliff, no entanto, pretende deixar os negócios para reencontrar seu antigo amor e a filha que ele sequer conheceu e está prestes a vender a companhia para Carter McKay.

Mas J.R. está disposto a tudo para reunir a família e recuperar o que era seu, até mesmo forjar sua morte para pôr as mãos na herança do filho e reconquistar a ex-mulher Sue Ellen (Linda Gray). Mais uma vez Bob tem que entrar em ação para impedir outro golpes do irmão.
